Teijin's New MINOTECH™ is Highly Water-repellent Fabric
Teijin Frontier Co., Ltd., the Teijin Group's fiber products converting company, announced today that it has developed MINOTECH™, a highly water-repellent outerwear material for 2017 spring/summer. Annual sales are expected to rise to two billion yen (about twenty million USD) by the fiscal year ending in March 2019, targeting to the Japanese and Chinese market.

The development of MINOTECH™ was inspired by the design of straw raincoats made in ancient Japan. It combines the usefulness of umbrella-quality fabric, the practicality of high-function wear and the attractiveness of a fashionable material.
Thanks to the material's micro-gutter structure (photo), tiny convex bulges reduce horizontal surface tension to enable raindrops to slip smoothly off the surface in a vertical direction. MINOTECH™ also has high moisture permeability due to its non-laminated structure, so it allows sweat vapor to escape, keeping the inner surface dry and pleasant to touch.
Numbers tell the story about MINOTECH™:
- Repellent: Grade 4
- Durable (after 30 washes): Grade 3
- Pressure resistent: over 300mm
Samples of MINOTECH™ will be included among some 700 fabrics and 350 garment products in Teijin Frontier's General Exhibition 9th For 2017 Autumn&Winter, "Spirit of FRONTIER" at TEPIA in Kitaaoyama, Tokyo on November 17 and 18.
